Clarkson/Leigh Goes “All-In” for First State Tournament Birth

WAHOO, Neb. – The Clarkson/Leigh volleyball team knew if they wanted to qualify for the state tournament they would have to live by the motto they have been using all season, “all-in.”

The Patriots went all-in Thursday night and defeated Lourdes Central Catholic in the Class D1-2 district final, 15-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-20 (3-1), at Wahoo High School.

Head Coach Becky Schneider says this is the first time Clarkson/Leigh (28-9) has qualified for the state tournament since co-oping.

“It feels awesome. I can’t even describe it. We’ve never been here before. We’ve dreamt of it since I’ve started coaching. So, it feels amazing!”

The Patriots took advantage of several service errors from the Knights. Schneider says her girls followed the game plan of dealing with Lourdes service errors and making sure they served aggressively.

Before co-oping, Clarkson had qualified twice for the state tournament in 1988 and 1989. They only had one total win. Leigh advanced to state three times in 1985, 1987 and 2005. They were able to earn three wins.

Nebraska City Lourdes played in their first district final since 2009. They finish the year 15-19.

The Nebraska School Activities Association state volleyball championships run from Nov. 9-11 in Lincoln. Clarkson/Leigh is projected to be the 6th-seed and will play #3 BDS in the first round Thursday 1:30 p.m.
