LINCOLN – Guardian Angels Central Catholic will be sending it’s second basketball team to the State Finals this season, with the boys taking down Randolph to punch their ticket on Friday.
Randolf and GACC battled through two quarters, with the Bluejays coming out hot, outscoring the Cardinals 18-8. Randolph responded strong in the 2nd Quarter though, with a big run of their own, outscoring GACC 18-9 to bring the game back to 1.
That comeback would’t last though as the Bluejays would put up 30 points in the final half, and holding Randolf to 19. Bluejays Head Coach Brad Slaughter says after a slow 2nd Quarter, Defense was the key to getting the offensive efficiency back on track.
“Tighten the screws. Pressure. Make things harder for [Logan] Nordhues and number 12 [Andrew Schnoor] and we just wanted to bring full court pressure. We noticed in a few games previously that it might’ve even given them a few problems in the past, and we’re smaller we like to get after it, and we did,” says Slaughter.
Randolf head Coach Mark Anderson says his team put together some great sequences, but just had a few slow periods that proved to be too much to overcome.
“We needed a few more things to happen today to be successful. Early on we gave them too many easy points. You kind of look at it, well how many easy points did we give them earl on in the game, that might’ve been the difference, but you know, we had our periods where we came back. We played pretty well offensively and defensively, and then that spell from the third quarter to the middle fourth quarter where we weren’t make any shots. But that happens in basketball sometimes, you got to get through it,” says Anderson.
The GACC family is fresh off the girls State Championship run from the past weekend, and with the 57-45 win, will be heading back to the Pinnacle Bank Arena to see if the boys can snag a Championship of their own. GACC was 11-13 heading into post season play, when the began their cinderella story that will result in a shot at the State Championship, against Lourdes Central Catholic at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Randolf will faec Lutheran High Northeast in the Consolation game at 1:00 p.m. at Lincoln East.
