Merlyn "Desh" A. Doescher
Memorial services for Merlyn "Desh" Alfred Doescher, of Norfolk, will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday July 12, 2014 at the Norfolk Veteran's Home, visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service. Reverend Chip Winter will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites rendered by the Nebraska National Guard Honor Guard, American Legion Post 16 and VFW Post 1644. Home for Funerals is in charge of arrangements.
Merlyn was born on May 13, 1932, in Hartington, NE, the son of Alfred and Ida (Bettenhausen) Doescher. He was baptized on January 23, 1933 in Hartington. Merlyn was confirmed on June 16, 1946, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Howells, NE. He attended school in Howells and Clarkson.
Before serving his country, Desh was employed at F & M Sales (Storz) in Columbus, NE. Merlyn entered the US Army on October 1, 1952. He obtained the rank of Sergeant in a machine gun squad of the 2nd Division, 23rd Battalion, Company B. He was stationed at the 38th Parallel in Korea. He earned his honorable discharge on July 20, 1954.
Desh returned to Nebraska and worked in Omaha at the Storz Brewing Company before transferring back to F & M Sales in 1954 at Columbus. He later owned a bar in Bellwood, NE, for three years. In 1964, he moved to Norfolk where he began his career with Becker Distributing.
On July 9, 1965, Merlyn married JoAnn M. Endes at Grace Lutheran Church in Norfolk. The couple made their home in Norfolk.
After 37 years at Becker Distributing, Desh retired in 2001.
He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, the American Legion and a life-time member of the VFW.
Merlyn is survived by his wife, JoAnn, one daughter, Stephanie and Brian Love, of Arvada, CO; two granddaughters, Amanda and Kaylie, grandson Jacob Doescher; two sisters, Val and Paul Pekarek, of Howells, NE, and Jeannette and Don Sucha, of Clarkson and a brother in-law Marvin Endes of North Glenn, Colorado.
He is preceded in death by his parents, one son, Glenn, his brother, Orland, two sisters, Darlene Ruzicka and Mrytle Mejstrick, 3 brother-in-laws, Donald Ruzika, Bob Dirkscheider and Bob Mejstrick.
