Carl M. Praeuner
Funeral services for Carl M. Praeuner, 93, of Battle Creek will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 12, 2014 at St. John Lutheran Church, Battle Creek. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery with Military Rites by American Legion Post 75 and the Nebraska National Guard Honor Guard.
Visitation will be Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church.
Steffen Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Praeuner died Thursday, May 8, 2014 at his home.
Carl Martin Paeuner son of Charles and Eda (Lampert) was born February 16, 1921 on the family farm south of Battle Creek. He was baptized on March 13, 1921 and confirmed on April 14, 1935 at St. Peter's Lutheran (Heights) Church. Carl graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1939. He farmed with his father before being drafted into the Army in July 1942. He was sent to North Africa, Sicily, England and France. He was wounded on D-Day, Omaha Beach, where he laid out on the beach all night and prayed. In the morning two U.S. Soldiers came by and helped him get to a hospital ship. He did not get back to the U.S. until December 1944. He got a medical discharge in April 1945. He farmed with his father until he married Ann Heybrock on September 14, 1947. His parents moved to Battle Creek and he continued to farm. They were active in St. Peter's Lutheran Church where he was a member of the men's chorus. In 1956 Carl and Ann and sons moved to Neligh where he sold Farm Bureau Insurance. He was active in Grace Lutheran Church serving as Elder, as Sunday School Teacher, in Lutheran Layman's League, and their Adult Choir. They moved back to Battle Creek in November 1990. He continued being active in St. John Lutheran Church as a member of Lutheran Laymen's League, Adult Choir, and Bible Classes.
He loved being with his family, playing golf, bowling, playing cards, watching Nebraska Football, or just visiting with friends and family.
Carl is survived by his wife Ann of Battle Creek, their sons, Reverend Daniel (Roxanne) Praeuner of Roswell, NM, Randy (Belinda) Praeuner of Battle Creek, and Roger Paeuner of Denver, CO, grandchildren Jennifer (Vince) Stephens of Omaha, Matthew Praeuner of Chicago, IL, Lynn (Brian) Penton, who is serving in the U.S. Air Force, and Carrie (Kevin) Huneke who is serving in the U.S. Army, great grandchildren, Justin, Kailee, and Elissa Stephens, Abbey, Allison, and Amber Penton, and Janelle, Daniel, and Martha Huneke and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Elmer, Harry, and Norman and their wives.
