Vergean P. Bethards
Memorial services for Vergean P. Bethards, 74, of Norfolk will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Christ Lutheran Church with private inurnment at a later date and the Rev. Chip Winter officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Stonacek Funeral Chapel.
She died Friday, July 18, 2014, at her home.
She was born July 24, 1939, at Norfolk to Harold and Opal (Waterbury) Leitzke. She was baptized Sept. 17, 1939, at Christ Lutheran Church, Norfolk, and confirmed May 17, 1953, at Christ Lutheran Church. She attended Christ Lutheran Parochial School, Norfolk, graduated from North Omaha High School and attended college at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. She married Bill Bethards Jr. on Aug. 23, 1957, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Omaha. After marriage Vergean and Bill lived in Omaha. The family moved to Norfolk in 1967. Vergean worked at Henningsen's, W.F. Machine Works and Earl May until her retirement. Throughout Vergean's life she enjoyed to cook for her family, gardening, sewing, decorating cakes and being involved with Christ Lutheran Church. Her family was a huge part of her life. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Norfolk, and member of the Braille workers, took care of the church banners, Alter Guild and was a leader for the Girl Scouts in Norfolk.
Survivors are husband Bill Bethards Jr. of Norfolk; two children, Jeff Bethards of Pilger and Mary Jane and husband Curt Hill of Stanton; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brother Earl and wife Verna Leitzke of Helena, Mont.; and sister Joyce and husband Delbert Scheffler of Norfolk She was preceded in death by son Christopher and parents Harold and Opal.
