Helen Mae (Wickersham) Svatos, daughter of Harvey and Chloe (Hittle) Wickersham, was born November 3, 1916, at Ticonic, Iowa. Helen was the third oldest of seven children, and was the last surviving member of her siblings. When Helen was a small child, she moved with her folks, two brothers, and a sister to Nebraska, relocating on a farm south of Monowi, Nebraska, and later, a farm east of Monowi. In 1929, the family moved to a farm west of Lynch, Nebraska, then into Lynch. Helen would call the Lynch community home for the rest of her life, with the exception of a short time in her later years. Helen received her education in both Monowi and Lynch.
On March 30, 1938, Helen was married to Marvin Svatos. To this union, two sons were born: Douglas and Marlin. Helen and Marvin farmed in the early years of their marriage until Marvin suffered a stroke. At this time, the young family moved into Lynch where Helen became the primary spouse, parent, breadwinner, caregiver, and rock for her family. Always a worker, Helen provided for her family and was a cook at Lynch Public Schools for over 26 years before her retirement. After Marvin's death, Helen continued to reside in her own home before moving in the past five years to Norfolk, Nebraska, to be closer to family.
Helen was a strong person; both physically and in spirit. She had an incredible memory, was very active, and walked everywhere well into her later years. Helen was a survivor and a determined soul, who selflessly devoted her life to caring for her husband and children against great odds, and never once gave up hope. Helen's dedication and care for her family will be greatly missed by all that loved and knew her. She died Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Heritage of Bel-Air in Norfolk, Nebraska, attaining the age of 97 years, eight months, and two days.
Helen is survived by her sons, Douglas (wife Darlene) Svatos of Hoskins, Nebraska, and Marlin (wife Brenda) Svatos of Cascade, Colorado; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Svatos; parents, Harvey and Chloe Wickersham; and all of her siblings.
