Ruben W. Vonderohe
Funeral services for Ruben W. Vonderohe, 91, of Norfolk will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 9, 2014 at Our Savior Lutheran Church; Norfolk Reverend Frank Brink will officiate. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Norfolk. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at Home for Funerals, Norfolk, Nebraska.
Ruben died Sunday, January 5, 2014 at Countryside Home in Madison.
Ruben William Vonderohe was born August 28, 1922 on the family farm north of Madison, Nebraska to William and Louise (Schilling) Vonderohe. He was baptized at Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk on September 24, 1922. He was confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church on May 31, 1936. Ruben attended a rural school (District 11) and finished the 8th grade at Christ Lutheran School. He worked on the family farm until he married Ruby Blank at St. John's Lutheran Church (Green Garden), Madison on December 26, 1944. They moved to a farm by Meadow Grove and later to another farm west of Madison. They moved into Madison in the early 60's and then to Norfolk in 1968.
Throughout Ruben's life he farmed, went to auctioneer school, and became a real estate broker. He began his real estate career when they lived in Madison, and moved to Norfolk during this time. Ruben and Ruby were Charter members of the Opportunity Center in Norfolk established for handicapped children. He at one time served as a President of the Norfolk Board of Realtors. He was a member of Sertoma and the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce. Ruben enjoyed fishing a lot, playing cards, gardening and visiting with friends. He loved watching sports. And last but not least, Ruben immensely enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved time spent with family with good food. He was an accomplished cook at home, and often shared his specialties with family and friends.
Survivors include four sons the Lord blessed Ruben and Ruby with. They include Gary; Dale (Bev); Robert (Melanie) all of Norfolk, and Ron (Karolyn) of Grand Island; one brother, William (Barbara) of Damascus, Oregon; and brothers and sisters in-law George & Margaret Blank and Bill & Anne Blank of Madison; Vance Blank of Redwood, California. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ruben has now joined the Lord in Heaven with the love of his life, Ruby, who was tragically killed in a car accident 35 years ago. He was also preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers (Clarence, Edwin, Elmer and Gerhardt), sister Lois Anderson, and infant granddaughters Valerie and Rachael Vonderohe.
