Margaret (Laird) Manion

Our beloved Margaret has died, but our memories will live on and on.

Margaret (Laird) "Marg" Manion was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1918, and lived her entire adult life, except for the last year, in Creighton, Nebraska. Marg and her husband Joe were the second owners of Manions' Drug Store that originally opened in 1902. There were three generations of Manion pharmacists from 1902-2012.

Marg was a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great grandmother-in our view, a woman for the ages. She lived for her greater family doing anything and everything for us. Before one gathering was over, she would be planning the next one, and the next one…. The mother in "The Christmas Story," who hadn't had "a warm meal in 15 years" comes to mind. Everyone else came first.

She was a good citizen in Creighton; for five years she flooded part of the yard for an ice rink for local kids; she provided food, a warming house, and skates for kids who didn't have any. Over the years, she and Joe brought many kids up to the Missouri River, so they could enjoy water sports.

Marg was a real sports fan; the Creighton basketball BlueJays and the Nebraska football Cornhuskers were her favorite teams. At 86, she learned basics on the computer and was able to follow the teams and also enjoy email from family and friends.

She loved to fish for walleye on the river by Niobrara. She kept the best spots secret from non-family members. She was our all-time Master Angler. In her prime she would collect up to 500 worms for bait in the city park after a rainstorm. No lie.

Marg loved to hunt pheasants. At age 80, she was a "poster" at the end of the field. A rooster, after surviving a fusillade of gunfire, saw this little old lady and thought he'd have an easy pass out of harm's way. Not so. She knocked him out of the sky. No lie, again.

Marg is survived by her children, Jim (Pat) Manion, Mary Ellen (John) Reiter, Mike (Karen) Manion, Pat (Dick) Bursell, Jody (Tom) Ritzdorf, and Teri (Bill) Brady; grandchildren, Joe(Marcia), Dan, Kathleen (Sam) Dubrow, Jimmy(Sarah Lathrop, fiance), Mike (Sarah) Reiter, Tim (Jessica) Reiter, Erin (Jeff) Swetnam, Emily Manion, Kay, John, and Joe Ritzdorf, Maggie (Josh) Sleigh, Mark (Lana) Brady, and Jill (Davis) Wilson; great-grandchildren, Leila Manion, Rebekah Arriaza, Jason and Leah Dubrow, Annie, Luke, and Chase Reiter, Jordan and Cam Reiter, Michael Swetnam, Hannah Sleigh, and Carter Brady; special niece, Joan Green; and other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband of 66 years, Joe; parents, John and Nellie Laird; brothers Vern, Babe (Grace), and Bill (Alberta); and sisters, Mary (Harold) Craven, and Dorothy (Hugh) O'Connell.

Per family request, memorials may be directed to the Joseph and Margaret Manion Endowed Pharmacy Scholarship at Creighton University in Omaha, the Creighton, Nebraska Fire Department, or the Avera Creighton Hospital in Creighton, Nebraska.
