Ernest W. Larsen, son of Louis and Helen (Longfellow) Larsen, was born July 17, 1920, near Niobrara, Nebraska. Ernest grew up on the family farm east of Niobrara, along what is now State Highway 54, leading to Santee, near the O'Connor Ranch. Ernest attended school near the family home, and upon completing his education, worked for various farmers around the region. In October of 1943, in the midst of World War II, Ernest was called to serve in the United States Navy until receiving his Honorable Discharge in December of 1945. During his time in the service, he attained the rank of 2nd Class Motor Machinist, serving aboard the USS Catskill, which was assigned to Okinawa and the Phillippines. After his time in the Navy, Ernest moved to the Naper, Nebraska area to work, having been employed in Boyd County prior to World War II. While living near Naper, on January 8, 1946, Ernest was married to Sadie M. Smith at O'Neill, Nebraska. Ernest and Sadie began their married lives on a farm near the "round barn" south of Butte, then purchased a farm near the Niobrara River. The couple was blessed with three children: Mary Helen, Jo Ann, and Lindley. Besides farming for himself and his family, Ernest also worked for the Hansen Brothers and for over 30 years, served as a Nebraska State Brand Inspector.

Ernest was a member of the Butte Community Bible Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Naper, and the American Legion post of Butte. When not working on the farm, he found much enjoyment in hunting, and was an avid fisherman. After Sadie's death in March of 1986, Ernest continued to reside on the farm until becoming a resident of the Golden Living Center in O'Neill, on July 5, 2013. During his time living in O'Neill, Ernest was baptized into the Christian faith on July 31, 2014.
