Bierman, Elizabeth "Betty"
Funeral services for Elizabeth A. "Betty" Bierman, 88, of Battle Creek, will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 10, 2014, at St. John Lutheran Church in Battle Creek. Reverend Richard Snow will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday, at St. John Lutheran Church. Steffen Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Bierman died February 6, 2014, at Community Pride Care Center.
Betty was born on December 3, 1925, on the family farm south of Battle Creek, the daughter of John and Bertha (Schmidt) Volk. She was raised on the family farm and graduated from Battle Creek High School. She continued her education by completing Normal Training at Wayne State Teacher's College and then taught in several rural school districts. During World War II, Betty worked in the Ordinance Plant in Fremont.
On December 14, 1947, Betty married Donald D. Bierman. The couple made their home on the family farm which they operated until Donald's death in 1991. Betty remained on the farm until moving into Battle Creek in 2005.
Betty was an avid vegetable and flower grower. She enjoyed canning and freezing her home grown produce. She also liked to bake cookies and other goodies which she readily shared with others.
Betty made it a point to share love, care and concern with everyone.
She was active in Emerick Goldenrod, Sweet Sixteen Extension Club, Battle Creek Lions Club. She served as a leader in the Brookside Beavers 4-H Club. Betty was a member of St. Peters and St. John Ladies Aid and she was a FFA Sponsor.
Betty is survived by her children: Jayne Decker, of Grand Island, Mark and Sharon Bierman, of Battle Creek, Lyndon and Susan Bierman, Battle Creek, Bryan and Dow Bierman, Amarillo, TX, and Joel and Shelly Bierman, Battle Creek; 19 grandchildren,19 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Jim Volk, Battle Creek, and Bob and Jeanette Volk, of Arlington, NE.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Donald, two brothers, John Volk and Kenneth Volk, son-in-law, Richard Decker, two daughters-in-law, Doris Volk and Stella Volk, one sister and her husband, Helen and Willis Grant.
