Columbus Auto Tech Earns World Class Certification

COLUMBUS – A Columbus Auto Technician is now 1 of 16 in Nebraska to earn the title GM World Class Technician.

Derek Schafer, a 1999 graduate of Lakeview High School, recently earned the certification after completing all nine master technician certifications, says Ernst Auto in Columbus. Schafer says he has been with Ernst for over 10 years, and was happy to receive the merit after many years of studying the different aspects of the field.

“It’s been a long process, and a lot of years of training, and a lot of people have helped me throughout the years. Different machine shops and different opportunities I’ve had working for neighbors and just kind of an ongoing deal. Just because I got the award doesn’t mean I’m done learning,” says Schafer.

Schafer said he focused on mastering the diesel engines, and had to complete a variety of tasks to earn the certification. Among the most intense, was having to search through several different types of vehicles that were bugged, and find out what was wrong with them within a specific time limit, says Schafer.

Along with the certification, Schafer received a metal trophy.
