Farm Service County Committee In Search For Next Candidate

WAYNE – Once a year the Farm Service Agency (FSA) holds a County Committee election, as they’re currently in the process of finding those nominations.

Wayne has three County Committee members who serve three-year terms. The position up for the 2017 election consists of Hunter, Logan, Brenna, Plum Creek and Leslie townships.

Kristi Hanau has been the County Executive Director since March of 2013. She said her office reports to the committee.

“They set the data that we use in our work when we’re using the farm bill,” said Hanau. “A lot of our farm bill has some county level kind of built into it.”

There are 71 FSA service centers in Nebraska that represent each county. County Committee members range from 3-11 depending on the size of the county.

Nomination forms must be post-marked or received in the Wayne US Department of Agriculture FSA office by August 1, 2017, located at 709 Providence Road. Ballots will be sent out to eligible voters in November and the newly elected County Committee member will take office January 1, 2018.

To be eligible candidates must be 18 years of age, live in the local administrative area that has a seat open and participate in a program administered by the FSA.

Hanau added that County Committee members are very important.

“They help us operate more effectively with the input and guidance and they’re dedicated to these positions,” Hanau added. “They are elected from the community and they do play an important role.”

The Farm Service Agency assists producers in accessing the benefits set forth by the federal farm bill including farm safety net programs, conservation, farm loan, price support and disaster and emergency programing.

The difference between the County Committee members and County Commissioners is that the Committee members don’t set policies, but rather administer.

Current County Committee members are John Mangels and Lynn Junck as Tim McQuistan is currently up for election.

Eligible members can nominate themselves or anyone by stopping in the Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services Farm Service Agency Wayne County Office. Give them a call at 402-375-2453 for more information.

There will be three more information meetings held at the Wayne County FSA Office on Wednesdays in July at 1 p.m. Those dates include July 5, 12 and 19.
