Field Fire Outside Wayne Burns Roughly 260 Acres Friday

WAYNE – With wind howling, several area fire departments responded to a field fire Friday afternoon.

The fire was reported five miles west and one and a half miles south of Wayne at approximately 3:50 p.m. The Wayne Volunteer Fire Department was on the scene and eventually joined by seven other area fire departments. According to a Wayne Volunteer Fire Department dispatcher, Stanton, Hoskins, Carroll, Wakefield, Winside, Wisner and Pilger departments all responded.

The fire traveled about two miles thanks to strong winds and burned roughly 260 acres of field and 100 hay bales. Nine tractors and discs were used to help get the fire down.

Several other area agencies were also on hand. Providence Medical Center provided care for firefighters, The Wayne County Sheriff’s office, Wayne County Emergency Management and Wayne County Department of Roads provided assistance. Initial reports caused some concern about powerlines, and Northeast Public Power was also on the scene to deal with electrical concerns.
