BEATRICE – Some area lakes continue to experience problems with water quality, because of the presence of toxic blue-green algae.
Health alerts were issued recently for Swan Creek Lake in Saline County and Kirkman’s Cove, in Richardson County.
Big Indian Lake in southern Gage County has also been found to have above-normal levels of E. Coli.
Public Health Solutions Health District says at the lakes on alert status, persons are urged not to have body contact with the water, and keep pets away. Activities such as boating and fishing are still okay.
Health officials say the higher E. Coli levels can be an indicator of sewage contamination, but Big Indian has not been posted for no swimming, because the lake has not been declared unsafe.
The E. Coli notice is simply to make the public aware of the higher than normal level, which can increase the risk of illness.
