NORFOLK — Paul Hughes fits right in at his new job and in northeast Nebraska.
The Battle Creek native is the Norfolk Area Sports Council’s new Sports Development Director. The link between him, his job and the people of the area: a love of sports.
“We’re really passionate about our sports, whether you’re talking baseball, basketball, football, but all the other sports too,” Hughes said. “It’s just a real sports-minded area.”
Hughes spent the last five years as the News Director at WJAG radio in Norfolk and previously served 24 years in the Air Force.
His new responsibilities include creating events and bringing existing events to the Norfolk area. He says he hopes to continue the efforts of his predecessor Mike Fuehrer in bringing events to the region.
“All of those events bring people, and all of those people sleep in our hotel rooms, eat in our restaurants, buy gas in our gas stations and shop in our stores,” Hughes said. “That’s what it’s all about; economic development.”
Hughes jumps right in to the position with one of the biggest events of the year on horizon, the state play production championships. He asks that anyone interested in volunteering at the event calls the Visitor’s Bureau.
