COLUMBUS, Neb. – A judge ruled this week that a Schuyler man accused of trying to kill a man with a screwdriver, is currently competent to stand trial.
Still, he will be evaluated further to see if he was insane at the time of the attack.
26-year-old Yoandri Fleitas-Llornete is charged with attempted murder, plus felony assault and weapon charges stemming from an incident in May.
Fleitas-Llornete’s insanity defense was struck down this week by Judge Mary Gilbride. Colfax County Attorney Denise Kracl said that they are now waiting results from a second evaluation to see if he was insane at the time.
Records say Fleitas-Llornete attacked his neighbor inside a vehicle with a screwdriver. The man suffered wounds to his head, chest, shoulder, back and hands.
The victim was flown to an Omaha hospital to treat his injuries.
Fleitas-Llornete next hearing is slated for January 10th.
