NORFOLK, NE — There will soon be a new sheriff in town.
Sheriff Vern Hjorth, the longest standing Madison County Sheriff, will soon retire and a new one will take his place.
Jon Downey has 30+ years of law enforcement experience. He first joined the Madison County Sheriff’s Department in 1994 as a Criminal Investigator.
Downey says he believes he has a lot of ideas to improve and expand on the department Hjorth has created.
“Things will remain the same on a daily basis but there will be a lot of changes behind the scene with some modernization and efficiency drive things.”
With a long list of awards and achievements, Downey wants to make the MCSO the best it can be.
“I want to be the leader in the state, recognized nationally as a good outstanding department and I would like to have happy employees and a well-run jail and a good efficient place.”
Given the chance at sheriff, Downey says he will run a great standup organization by building on the past and taking it into a progressive future.
