FREMONT – While the winds and rains of Hurricane Harvey caused devastation in the Houston, Texas area, the impact is being felt everywhere, including the Midland University campus.
This week students at Midland are putting together two different efforts to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Donations will be collected at the Midland Volleyball game tonight, and Midland’s Campus Ministries will be holding a Hot Cakes 4 Houston event on Saturday. Communications Content Manager, Tracy Buffington, says there are students who come from Texas and the Houston area, and their families were affected by the hurricane.
“Our student affairs team has said there are 29 students who are from Texas. Five of those have families who actually live in the Houston area,” said Buffington. “The good news is all those families are safe. But as we know the Houston area suffered immensely from the flooding, and will be striving to overcome that for the next several months, and years actually.”
During the Warrior Volleyball game against Concordia University this evening, fans will be able to donate to the Salvation Army’s relief efforts. People can donate personal hygiene items, baby items such as diapers and wipes, and basic first aid supplies. Pak Mail has made a donation toward the cost of shipping all the donated items to the Salvation Army in Houston.
Also Hot Cakes 4 Houston will take place on Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Donations will be collected, and a $5 donation is suggested. The proceeds will be going to Samaritan’s Purse. The campus food service provider, Fresh Ideas, has donated pancake mix to the event, and other local businesses have also made donations to the meal. Buffington says these efforts from students showcase the close community on the Midland campus.
“A lot of the students have stepped forward themselves. The members of the volleyball team, members of the basketball team, the students who are involved in campus ministry. They recognized the impact it has taken on the families in Texas,” said Buffington. “We have a very close-knit community here on campus. It’s a good extension of what we are, and who we are at Midland, that when people need to come together, they do. And we’ve seen that in Texas, and we’ve seen that here on campus.”
The Warrior Volleyball game against Concordia University will begin at 7:30 p.m. tonight, and Hot Cakes 4 Houston will be from 7 to 10 a.m. on Saturday.
