National Leader Visits Columbus

COLUMBUS – Local veterans join together in welcoming a national leader.

Monday morning  the American Legion National Commander Mike Helm, visited the Hartman 84 Post as part of his national tour.

“It’s a tremendous honor for your post to have the National Commander come and visit your post,” says Honor Guard Mike Landkamer ,” He has a lot of places to go, he has a very busy schedule and to take time out to come out and see you is a great honor.”

Helm was born in McCook Nebraska and is a current member of the American Legion Post 313 in Lebanon Nebraska.

The US Army Vietnam War Veteran has been National Commander since August 28th of 2014.

Before sitting down for lunch the Nebraska native discussed the future of the organization, and the important role that it plays in the community.

“Those post that are active and doing things in the community all across this land, I see a lot of success,”  says Helms.

The American Legion has raised over four million dollars for charities in the past year alone.

Helm’s next stop is Silver Creek then he will visit several more post on his way back across the state towards the Lincoln area.
