NECC Earns Aspen Top 10 Recognition in D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Northeast Community College is a Top 10 community college in the country.

College President Dr. Michael Chipps received the Top 10 honor from the Aspen Institute, an international research institute, at a ceremony at the Newseum in Washington DC on Tuesday.

The Prize of Community College Excellence is the result of a two-year review that aims to further the national understanding of community colleges that strive to increase student success, stimulate innovation and create benchmarks for measuring progress, according to a news release.

In the release, executive director of the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program Josh Wyner, said Northeast “has evolved from a strictly agricultural-focused vocational school to an ambitious institution providing opportunities ranging from short-term job training to study abroad and academic preparation for transfer to a four-year college.”

At the ceremony, Northeast was recognized for achieving a 60 percent three year graduation/transfer rate, achieving a high certificate or degree completion rate and boasting strong labor market outcomes.

Chipps said the college’s inclusion in the Aspen Top 10 reaffirms the excellent work taking place at Northeast.
