New Information in Cuming County Murder Case

CUMING, NE — A Nebraska man facing murder charges among others appeared in Cuming County District Court Thursday.

48-year old Jody Olson sat in front of Judge Mark Johnson while an investigator with the Nebraska State Patrol testified to the March slaying for over an hour.

Jody and his son Derek are charged with second-degree murder, arson and related crimes. They’re accused of killing 64-year-old Ernest Warnock, whose body was found March 11 in the rubble of his home north of Bancroft. Investigators have determined that he’d been stabbed to death during an altercation before the fire began.

Court records say that Derek and Jody became suspects when they were stopped for speeding on Highway 77. Jody’s wife, Becky Weitzenkamp along with Jenna Mac Merrill were also passengers in the car. According to investigators Mac Merrill is on the run.

Jody initially wasn’t charged with murder until about two weeks ago when prosecutors filed the charge.

Both men remain in jail with bail at one million dollars.
