Norfolk High’s “Footloose” to Premier Thursday

NORFOLK — Norfolk Senior High Musical Director Taryn Retzlaff has a group of seniors who embrace dancing, so why not do a musical about a town that doesn’t embrace dancing?

“Footloose the Musical” will run at the Johnny Carson Theatre Thursday-Saturday with those energetic seniors leading the way.

“So we chose a musical that was more dance-friendly,” Retzlaff said. “There is more opportunity for dance, for choreography, things like that.”

With opening night on the horizon there were still some parts to clean up, but make no mistake that Senior Elliot Brummond, who plays Kevin Bacon’s character Ren, is pumped to perform the lead role.

“Being a lead in our high school musical has been my dream since I was a little, little kid because I would come to musicals every year,” Brummond said. “I was like, I want to do that when I’m older. Then I got to high school and I finally did it, my senior year I got it.”

Fans of the 1984 movie can expect to see something very similar, but with more songs, which Retzlaff says people from the 80s will remember and enjoy. She says the students have hit the trifecta with this musical.

“Wonderful music, great dancing and good singing,” Retzlaff said. “So it’s the whole atmosphere of just kind of it’s a big party throughout. They have a lot of fun with it.”

Admission is $5 for students and $7 for adults with the musical beginning at 7:00 PM.
