Norfolk-Native is Charity’s Woman of the Year Candidate

NORFOLK — Rebecca Hoobler is enlisting the help of her hometown to raise money for her cause.

The Norfolk High graduate is a candidate for the Nebraska Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Woman of the Year Honor. How do you vote? Well, with your dollar. Each dollar Hoobler raises is one vote.

Northeast Nebraskan’s will have a chance to donate Saturday night. The Pizza Hut at 25th and Benjamin will donate 10 percent of its proceeds to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Hoobler says the donations are used to fund cancer research.

“And that’s what the fundraisers are all about, is just getting the word out about the research and the new treatments so people can live longer lives,” Hoobler said.

She first got involved with the charity nine years ago at the school she teaches at in Hastings. She has since taken charge of the school’s Pennies for Patients campaign.

“We always say every penny counts for cancer research. Just getting them involved, getting a smile on their faces and acting a little goofy for a worthwhile cause. I think that was my pivotal point,” Hoobler said.

Hoobler has a ten week campaign before the the Woman of the Year is determined.
