Norfolk School Board Splits Committees

NORFOLK — The Norfolk Public Schools Board of Education made changes to one of its Board policies at its meeting Monday night.

After discussing the idea in last month’s meeting, the School Board unanimously voted to split the Policy and Government Relations committees into two committees. The move follows an increase in attention paid to the state legislature and other government bodies affecting education.

At last month’s meeting, Superintendent Dr. Jami Jo Thompson said there were 187 bills in this legislative session that could directly impact education. Having one committee focused on the political arena would allow them to better inform each other and the public on legislative happenings.

Other policies discussed at the meeting include the district’s policy on Weather Related Absences. The current system states that if NPS dismisses school for more than three day for snow or other reasons, two of the days must be made up. NPS has given three snow days this year, so one more would trigger an additional two days of school.

The board agreed to review this policy over the summer.
