WINSIDE – There is still room to sign up to get certified in firearm hunter education scheduled for this weekend in Winside.
From the Winside American Legion Hall, those 11 years and older are invited to participate in the Nebraska Game and Parks Firearm Hunter Education Class. The class is scheduled for this coming Saturday and Sunday, September 16-17 from 1-6 p.m. both days.
Darin Greunke has been an instructor of the course for over 10 years. He talked more about what the Nebraska Game and Parks Firearm Hunter Education Class has to offer.
“What this training if for is to train safe, and responsible and knowledgeable hunters,” said Gruenke.
The class has been held in Winside for over 10 years. Since the course has gone to the computerized system the classes have been almost full.
“I can take up to 20 signed in,” Greunke added. “Then I do have some wiggle room for some walk-ins if needed.”
Following the two days of the class there is a test.
The group will cover a lot of firearm safety from how the guns work, types of ammunition and even about serving the habitat for the game that is hunted.
Gruenke has fun teaching the course.
“Knowing and hearing some of these kids come back and talk to me after they’ve had the class and a few years of hunting experience and say, ‘hey what you taught me really payed off in certain instances’,” Greunke mentioned. “So, that’s the gold in my pocket so to speak.”
To enroll, go to https://www.register-ed.com/events/view/108132 or you can visit outdoornebraska.gov and click on the Education tab and follow the directions from there. Online registration has been open since late August.
