LYONS – Celebrate small-town Nebraska art on a tour through Decatur, Oakland and Lyons, Saturday, September 30th. The Byway of Art project, administered by the Center for Rural Affairs, highlights community-driven art fixtures in the three communities.
The public is invited to learn about Decatur’s rural legends, enjoy a musical on Oakland’s Lycka Till and see a movie at Lyon’s Storefront Theater.
From 3 to 5 p.m., visitors can meet at Decatur’s trolley to pick up a passport and receive their first stamp. There, they will learn about local history and folklore. The Decatur Museum will also be open to give more insight on the community and those on the tour can get another stamp in their passports.
Next on the Byway of Art Tour, is Oakland’s Lycka Till. Lycka Till, which debuted at the Swedish Festival in May, is a mobile stage with a backdrop of Swedish row homes. The stage will be located at 401 N. Oakland Avenue, in front of the city auditorium. There, tourist will be treated to a performance of “Ole’s Last Bow,” a musical based on the true story of Ole Ivverson, one of the last Swedish vaudeville performers. Supper will be available for purchase and community organizers will be on hand to stamp passports. Oakland’s events will run from 5 to 7 p.m.
The art tour ends in Lyons from 7 to 9, Saturday night. Attendees will have the opportunity to see “Decades, a movie about the history of downtown Lyons, at the Storefront Theater. Free popcorn will be provided at the theater located at 214 Main Street. The Andromeda Gallery at 210 North Main Street and Cosmic Studios at 206 North Main Street, will also be open and giving out passport stamps to visitors. Those who have collected all of the stamps on the tour can sign up for a grand prize drawing at the theater.
This will be the third installment of the Byway of Art project, which has won a national award for compelling public art. The event is free and open to the public.
