PIERCE – A Northeast Nebraska state recreation area has been added to the list of sites suffering form high levels of toxic algae.
The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality on Friday added Willow Creek Reservoir in Pierce to the list of sites with high levels of toxic blue-green algae.
The health alert will continue for at least two more weeks. Samples at lakes must be below harmful levels for two consecutive weeks before an alert is lifted.
While the alert is in effect, public swimming will be closed. Boating and fishing is allowed, but the public is advised not to get in the water or allowed their pets to drink the water or get in it. Camping, picnics, and other outdoor activities are allowed.
