YMCA Hosts 7th Indoor Triathlon

NORFOLK, NE — Northeast Nebraska’s triathletes don’t stop in the winter, they just move indoors.
The Norfolk YMCA hosted their seventh annual Indoor Triathlon on Sunday morning.  The event is time based instead of distance based like it’s outdoor counterpart.  Athletes swim for 10 minutes, bike for 30, and run for 20… with 10 minute breaks in between events.  At the end, lengths swam and miles biked and ran are totaled up to find winners in age divisions and genders.
YMCA Health and Wellness Director Nicole Dennis says the indoor triathlon is gaining in popularity.
“It definitely has increased, even from last year,” Dennis said.  “This year we’re at 45 participants and last year we were at around 32.  We’re definitely seeing an increase, we’re seeing a lot more out of town people.”
Dennis thinks participants enjoy the event because it keeps serious triathletes in competition and gives beginners a chance.
“Because they’re just going for an allotted time, everybody is in the same boat,” Dennis said.  “They all go for the same time and then whatever your distance is is what you write down.”
All of the YMCA’s special events are open to the public.
