#1 Burke Spoils Homecoming Night for Norfolk

NORFOLK – If you like a lot of touchdowns in a football game, Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Field in Norfolk was a game you didn’t want to miss.

After a touchback on the opening kick-off, the #1 Omaha Burke Bulldogs wasted no time in finding the end zone, scoring on the first play of the game as junior quarterback Tyler Chadwick hooked up with speedster Xavier Woods on a 80-yard touchdown pass.

The Bulldogs would lead 6-0, after the missed PAT, just twelve seconds into the game.

Norfolk’s offense couldn’t get anything going at the beginning, forced to two straight three and outs to start, but there defense stood tall and didn’t make things easy on a experienced Burke squad.

Towards the end of the first quarter, Norfolk’s offense began to fire. Junior quarterback Brandon Hart help lead the team down the field and capped it off with a beautiful touchdown pass on a fade route to Zack James for 9-yards, giving Norfolk the 7-6 lead.

With 9:33 left in the first half, Brayden Splatter picked up a fumble by Omaha Burke running back James Burks and scored from 20-yards out giving Norfolk a 14-6 lead over the #1 team in the state.

Just 25 seconds later, Burke strikes back with a 31-yard touchdown from Chadwick to Watts, again, to tie the game at 14-14 after the two point conversation.

Omaha Burke didn’t look back.

The Bulldogs scored 21-0 unanswered points in the second quarter before Norfolk’s Hart connected with senior Connor Clayton for a 21-yard touchdown pass just before halftime. Omaha Burke led at the break 35-21.

Norfolk started with the ball in the 3rd quarter, and in just a few plays running back Elias Alvarez broke loose for a 50 yard touchdown to pull Norfolk within a touchdown.

That would be the last time Norfolk would score.

Omaha Burke proved why they are the #1 team in the state, scoring 28-0 unanswered points to end the game and improve to 3-0 on the season with a 63-28 victory.

Quarterback Tyler Chadwick of Burke finished the night (unofficially) with 338 yards passing on the night and 4 touchdowns on the night. Junior running back James Burks finished with 129 rushing and two touchdowns.

Norfolk drops to 0-3 for the first time since 2008. Junior quarterback Brandon Hart finished the night with 119 yards passing along with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

The Panthers will be back on the road next Friday to take on Lincoln North Star.
