Dirt Devil 16/18’s Finish Runner-Up, 12’s Suffer Semi-Final Loss During Golden Girls Tourney

NORFOLK – The other two Wayne Dirt Devil softball age divisions traveled to Norfolk to compete in the Golden Girls Tournament over the weekend.

From Ta-Ha-Zouka park in Norfolk, the Dirt Devil 16/18’s as well as the 12’s took part in all three days of the tournament.

The Dirt Devil 16/18’s finished second place, going 4-1. Wayne picked up wins over the Golden Girls (6-0), David City (10-1), Screaming Eagles (6-1) and David City (3-1) while losing to the Golden Girls in the championship game (7-2). Wayne is now 19-2-1 on the season and will host Tekamah-Herman this evening at 6:30 p.m. from the Summer Sports Complex.

In Friday’s win over the Golden Girls, Kennedy Maly recorded a double and drove in two runs. Ashten Gibson singled and added a RBI.

Gibson picked up the complete game shutout win in five innings allowing three hits while striking out five batters and walking one.

During the first win over David City, Maly added a homerun and single to go along with three RBI’s. Abby Ankeny also homered to add three RBI’s while Danica Schaefer recorded a triple and single.

Gibson picked up the complete game win in five innings allowing an earned run off of three hits while striking out six batters and walking one.

In Saturday’s win over the Screaming Eagles, Gibson recorded a single, double and a RBI. Ankeny singled twice and drove in a run while Cortney Bokemper doubled. Sidney Biggerstaff and Grace Lindsay each singled and drove in a run.

Gibson picked up the complete game win in six innings allowing an earned run off of three hits while striking out six batters and walking three.

From Sunday’s win over David City, Ankeny paced the team with two singles. Biggerstaff singled and drove in two runs while Schaefer singled and added a RBI.

Gibson recorded her fourth straight win over the weekend allowing one run off of one hit while striking out seven batters.

The run production then came to an end with the championship loss to the Golden Girls on Sunday.

Gibson had a three-hit game with a double and two singles to pace Wayne at the plate. Jamie Gamble singled twice as Jenna Trenhaile doubled and drove in a run while Kiara Hochstein tripled and drove in a run.

Gibson suffered the loss in five innings allowing five runs (one earned) off of eight hits while striking out one batter. Bokemper worked two innings allowing two runs off of two hits while striking out one batter.

 

Moving into the 12’s division, Wayne went 3-2 and lost in the semi-finals Sunday. The Dirt Devil 12’s lost the Golden Girls (4-1) while winning over the Lady Cougars (11-1), Hastings Crush (5-0) and Lady Cougars (4-0) before suffering an 8-0 loss to the Golden Girls. The 12’s are now 12-6 on the season and will next host the Yankton River Bandits on Thursday, June 15 at 6/7:30 p.m. from the Summer Sports Complex.

From Friday’s loss to the Golden Girls, the 12’s recorded three hits. Brianna Nissen singled and drove in a run while Hope O’Reilly and Liberty Titiml each singled.

Kendall Dorey suffered the loss in four innings allowing four runs (two earned) off of five hits while striking out 11 batters and walking two.

In the first win over the Lady Cougars, the 12’s only needed two hits. Logan Miller recorded a single with two RBI’s while Taytum Sweetland singled and drove in a run. O’Reilly added two RBI’s.

Dorey picked up the complete game win in three innings allowing one run off of two hits while striking out five batters and walking another two.

During the win over Hastings, Dorey doubled and drove in a run. Nissen also doubled to drive in a run while Sweetland singled.

Dorey picked up the complete, shutout, win in five innings allowing three hits while striking out 12 batters and walking two.

From the second win over the Lady Cougars, O’Reilly accounted for the lone single and added a RBI. Brooklyn Kruse scored twice.

Dorey picked up the complete game, shutout/no-hitter, win in six innings striking out eight batters and walking five.

The Dirt Devil 12’s then were shutout in the semi’s by the Norfolk Golden Girls. Kruse recorded the lone hit, being a double.

Dorey suffered the loss in three and a third innings allowing eight runs (four earned) off of six hits while striking out and walking three batters each.
