COLUMBUS – The Wayne High girls and boys cross country team took part in the 2017 Columbus Scotus Invitational Thursday.
From Lutjelusche Course, the Blue Devil girls posted a fifth-place finish with 79 points as the boys took 10th with 192 points.
Boone Central/Newman Grove was the top team in the girls division with 27 points, holding off Columbus Scotus who took second (61), David City Aquinas finished third (61) and Minden placed fourth (76).
A pair of Boone Central/Newman Grove freshmen went one-two out of 89 runners. Sam Weeder won the girls 5K in 20:50 followed by teammate Jordan Stopak in second in a time of 21:08. Senior Andrea Torres of Wayne High finished third (21:24).
Other Blue Devil finishers were junior Gabi Meyer (13th – 22:54), senior Molly Hoskins (21st – 23:57), junior Sarah Greenwald (46th – 25:28), freshman Emily Chamberlain (47th – 25:38), freshman Andi Belt (58th – 26:43) and junior Madison Jenkins (70th – 29:34).
Columbus Lakeview won the boys division with a team score of 50 points, followed by Wahoo in second just a point back (51), Norfolk Catholic finished third (66), David City Aquinas placed fourth (70) and Columbus Scotus rounded out the top five teams (78).
Senior Eli Frasher from Aquinas was the top overall runner on the 5k course in a time of 16:43 out of 141 runners. Wayne High’s top runner was freshman Christopher Woerdemann who came in 30th (19:49).
Other Blue Devil finishers were junior Brandon Wacker (60th – 21:35), freshman Liam Spieker (66th – 21:53), freshman Treyton Blecke (67th – 21:54), sophomore Cole Hobza (94th – 23:21), freshman Lance Muhs (115th – 24:28) and sophomore Stuart Hasemann (132nd – 26:54).
