WAYNE – After some time off, the Wayne High wrestling team was back in action over the weekend competing in a wrestling dual tournament.
From Bennington High School, the Blue Devils joined nine other teams Saturday during the Badger Duals.
WHS fell in the opening round to Wahoo (63-13) while suffering losses to Bellevue East (54-30), Ralston (42-39), Fairbury (54-24) and Ashland-Greenwood (34-27).
Hastings won the Badger Duals, followed in second by Bellevue East, Wahoo took third, Omaha Skutt Catholic finished fourth, Fairbury (fifth), Bennington (sixth), Crete (seventh), Ralston (eighth), Ashland-Greenwood (ninth) and Wayne High (10th).
In the first match, Berto Vergara (160) won his match by decision (7-3) as both teams had a double forfeit at 113 and Reece Jaqua (120) won by forfeit.
From the second match, Berto Vergara also won by fall (2:40) while Daniel Maxson (195) won by fall (2:50), as did Hunter Jorgensen (220) by fall (2:33). Reece Jaqua won by fall in 39 seconds and Juan Vergara (132) won by injury (2:47).
In the third match, Berto Vergara won by decision (3-1), Maxson (3:57) and Jorgensen (1:38) each won by fall. Cameron Muhs (126 – 1:19), Juan Vergara (3:03), Victor Kniesche (138 – 1:50) all won by fall and Edwin Espino (145) won by forfeit.
From the fourth match, Berto Vergara won by fall in 38 seconds as Jorgensen (1:25), Jaqua (4:20) also won by fall. Muhs (9-5) and Juan Vergara (2-0) each won by decision.
In the ninth-place match, Muhs won by decision (11-5) as Juan Vergara (1:47) and Kniesche (3:11) each won by fall. Jaqua and Berto Vergara both won by forfeit.
The Wayne High wrestlers will next be in action on Saturday, January 6 at the Winside Invitational starting at 9:30 a.m.
