#17 Wildcat Volleyball Hands USF First Loss Of Season

WAYNE – The Wayne State College volleyball team began NSIC play Thursday evening from Rice Auditorium.

#17 WSC played host to Sioux Falls in front of a crowd of 707 fans.

The ‘Cats won the opening sets, 25-19 and 25-22 while the Cougars won back-to-back sets of 25-20 to force the fifth set. WSC was victorious in the final set, 15-12 to improve to 6-3 (1-0 NSIC) while the Cougars are now 5-1 (0-1 NSIC).

Sophomore Katie Stephens paced the Wildcats at the net with 16 kills, followed by senior Erin Gross with 15 and sophomore Tarrin Bellar added 13 kills and two solo blocks. Junior Megan Gebhardt was the team leader in set assists with 48 as sophomore Haley Kauth tacked on 21 digs.

As a team USF outhit WSC, .241 to .228, but the ‘Cats had 14 team blocks compared to eight from the Cougars.

#17 Wayne State College is next in action on Saturday, September 16 at #1 Southwest Minnesota State. The Mustangs recently won in five-sets at #9 Augustana University Thursday.
