Multiple Run Innings Allowed By WSC Softball, Results In 0-2 Saturday

ST. JOSEPH, MO – It was back to the middle of the six-game series in three days with NSIC battling with MIAA teams, Wayne State College took on both Missouri Southern and #9 Central Oklahoma Saturday.

From the opening contest, it was Missouri Southern getting on the board with two runs in the second, one in the fourth and two more in the fifth to lead 5-0. Wayne State brought in only two runs in the top of the sixth to fall 5-2.

Senior Alyssa Schropp paced the ‘Cats at the plate with four of the team’s nine hits as junior Rachel Shumaker added a multi-hit game with two hits. Sophomore Emily Chandler and senior Monique Alyea each tallied a RBI, scoring freshman Sarah Hunter and sophomore Abbie Hix.

Sophomore Riley Vanderveen suffered the loss (0-5) in an inning and a third allowing two earned runs off of five hits. Junior Nataliah Hopkins pitched four and two-third innings allowing three earned runs off of 11 hits while striking out three batters.

During the second game on Saturday, the ‘Cats would score early with single runs in the top of the second and fourth. Trailing 2-0, Central Oklahoma then scored five runs in the fourth while Wayne State added one more run in the sixth to fall 5-3.

Shumaker recorded a multi-hit game with two singles and a RBI as Chandler accounted for a double and two runs scored.

Hopkins suffered the loss in six innings of work allowing five runs off of nine hits while striking out two batters and walking one.

The Wayne State softball team will have their non-conference tournament schedule come to an end Sunday with Missouri Western and Fort Hays State.
