Wayne State Baseball Drops Conference Home Opener Double Header

WAYNE – The 2017 NSIC home opener weekend took place for the Wayne State College baseball team when Minot State University was in town.

WSC defeated MISU on March 9 in US Bank Stadium (9-4) during a nine-inning contest.

The ‘Cats and Beavers began a four-game series with a pair of games on Saturday.

From the opening contest, Minot State added single runs in the first and second before the ‘Cats mounted a three-run second inning. Trailing 3-2, the Beavers then scored a run in the fifth, three in the sixth and one more in the seventh to win 7-3.

The only extra bag, was from sophomore Kyle Thompson with double and a RBI. Senior Tandon Dorn and senior Chris May added a single and RBI each while senior Aaron Krier accounted for another single.

Redshirt senior Bobby St. Pierre suffered the loss (1-2) in five and a third innings of work allowing six runs (four earned) off of seven hits whiles striking out four batters and walking three. Junior Kyle Kennebeck worked an inning and two-thirds allowing an earned run off of three hits while striking out two batters and walking one.

During the second game on Saturday, Minot would take control early with one run in the first and three more in the third. Leading 4-0, MISU added another run in the fifth, two more in the seventh and a four-run eighth inning. WSC would not be shutout, scoring a run in the eighth but lost 11-1.

In the defensive battle from the Beavers, only redshirt freshman Bryce Bisenius and freshman Peyton Barnes accounted for a single each. Barnes also scored the lone run.

Wayne State used four pitchers in the eight-inning contest. Freshman Hunter Weinhoff suffered the loss (1-2) in two and two-third innings of work allowing four earned runs off of two hits while striking out two batters and walking another four.
