WAYNE – With Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schools letting out for the summer, an All-Conference award was handed out Thursday.
For the third consecutive year, Augustana University was crowned with the NSIC All-Sports Award. Finishing with 180 points, the Vikings placed just ahead of Minnesota State-Mankato for the second year in a row who finished with 178 points. Both schools have 18 conference sports.
The Vikings will be presented their award on Tuesday, July 11 at the NSIC Hall of Fame Banquet in Burnsville, Minnesota.
Winona State came in third with 127 points, Minnesota Duluth finished fourth with 119.25 points and St. Cloud State rounded out the top five schools with 118 points.
Out of 16 league teams, Wayne State College and Bemidji State both have the third lowest amounts of conference sports, in 13. The Wildcats just edged BSU for 13th with 76.75 points as the Beavers placed 14th with 74.75 points.
Minnesota Crookston has the least amounts of conference sports (10) followed by Upper Iowa with 12.
The NSIC All-Sports Award is calculated by awarding the winner of each conference-sponsored championship points totaling the number of teams in that sport plus one. The next place finisher receives points totaling the number of teams less the number of places from first place. Ties in the standings at any level result in the totaling of points and equal distribution. Indoor and outdoor track & field are computed at half the total points as listed in the previous mentioned categories.
