ALBION – When Hartington Cedar Catholic fell behind 33-26 in the third quarter they needed an answer.
Matthew Becker provided it.
Becker scored six points over the final two minutes of the third quarter, helping the Trojans to a quarter-ending 8-2 run that pulled them within one of Boone Central/Newman Grove. They carried that momentum into the fourth quarter, beating the Cardinals 52-45.
“We have a great group of senior leaders that kept everybody’s heads up,” Becker said after the game. “It was a great team win.”
Head Coach Matt Steffen said that pushing the tempo of the game helped Cedar Catholic take control.
“We really talked to the kids about pushing the ball and really trying to make them run,” Steffen said. “The question for us was whether or not [Boone Central] was in basketball condition or not.”
Becker finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, but it could have been more. He had a picture-perfect put-back dunk that was waved off because of a foul. He said he hopes to get a few more opportunities at highlight reel plays like that later this this season.
“That just comes from playing hard and going to get rebounds,” Becker said.
The Trojans will look to go 2-0 against Bloomfield on Tuesday.
