ALBION – #2 Norfolk Catholic hasn’t lost to #10 Boone Central/Newman Grove since 2014. That would not change after Friday night.
After forcing Boone Central/Newman Grove to punt on their first drive, Norfolk Catholic scored two plays later after Kelby Schaefer raced home for a 66-yard touchdown to give Norfolk Catholic a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.
The Cardinals went to work on their next drive as Dylan Gentrup used a 31 yard run to set up a 12 yard touchdown he took in himself two plays later to tie the game at 7-7.
Outside of the 66-yard touchdown run from Schaeffer, Norfolk Catholic’s stout run game was held in check for majority of the first half. Just a few minutes into the second quarter, Dylan Kautz was able to find the end zone on a 3-yard run to give Norfolk Catholic a 14-7 lead.
After a 37-yard field goal by Payton Love to give the Knights a 17-7 lead, back came Boone Central/Newman Grove as they marched down the field and capped off the drive with a 14 yard touchdown pass from Gentrup to Ethan Dozler.
Fourteen seconds later, Norfolk Catholic striked back. Dylan Kautz showcased his speed to score on a 58-yard touchdown to give Norfolk Catholic a 24-14 lead heading to halftime.
Last year Norfolk Catholic and Boone Central/Newman Grove had their game called at halftime due to weather. On Friday Night, a severe thunderstorm warning and heavy lightning delayed the game for 55 minutes with 1:13 left in the 3rd quarter.
Just before 10:00 p.m., play would resume in Albion as Norfolk Catholic had the football.
With seconds gone in the 4th quarter, Evan Smith got in on the scoring action as he gave the Knights a 34-14 after a 31-yard touchdown run.
Norfolk Catholic would go on to win 48-35 and improve to 4-0 on the year as they head into a rivalry game against Pierce next Thursday. Dylan Kautz rushed 25 times for a total of 244 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Despite the loss, the Cardinals racked up 512 (unofficial) yards of total offense. Dylan Gentrup accounted for 438 total yards on the evening. Boone Central/Newman Grove drops to 2-2 on the season and will host Columbus Lakeview next Friday.
Pierce at Norfolk Catholic will broadcasted on News Channel Nebraska TV channel 35, 94.7 FM KNEN, and streamed online at ncnsportsnow.com.
