WAYNE – One the smallest teams in Class B and in program history, the Wayne High softball team took part in the District Softball Tournament needing just two wins to secure a spot at state.
From Wisner River Park in Wisner, #1 Wayne High took on #4 Wisner-Pilger Monday morning. WHS scored at least one run in each inning, capping off a three-run fifth inning to win 8-0.
In the championship game against #3 David City/East Butler, the Blue Devils came out with a six-run fourth inning to also win 8-0 in five innings.
Wayne High is now 28-3 overall and have qualified for the NSAA State Softball Tournament for the 11th consecutive year, 15th in program history.
The Blue Devils brought in singles runs in the first and second innings while adding two more runs in the third to lead 4-0 over the host Gators. In the fourth, WHS added another run and scored three more runs in the fifth to win 8-0.
Junior Annie Kniesche paced Wayne at the plate with a double while driving in a run. Senior Jamie Gamble and junior Abby Ankeny each recorded two singles and two RBI.
Sophomore Tori Kniesche picked up her ninth no-hitter of the season in five innings of work, tying the Class B state record. She struck out 11 batters and walked another two.

During the district title game both teams were scoreless entering the fourth inning. WHS brought in six runs in the bottom of the fourth while winning the game with two runs in the fifth.
Senior Jenna Trenhaile recorded a single and two-run homer while junior Maysn Dorey added a three RBI double to pace WHS at the plate. Annie Kniesche and Gamble each added a single and double as Gamble tacked on a RBI. Junior Josie Thomsen and Tori Kniesche each tallied a double and RBI.
It marked the 10th no-hitter for Tori Kniesche, setting a new Class B state record and also securing the perfect game. She struck out 10 batters in five innings of work, facing only 15.

#4 Wayne High will face #5 Gretna on Wednesday, October 11 at 2 p.m.
Other Class B champions: Gretna (B1), Elkhorn South (B2), Crete (B3), Hastings (B5) and McCook (B6). York and Seward are the Class B Wildcard teams.
