Blue Devil Volleyball Concluding First Week Of Practice

WAYNE – Another one of the many high school volleyball teams across the state began practice earlier this week on Monday. The Wayne High Blue Devils entered their fourth practice, Thursday.

Making up this year’s WHS volleyball team will be 26 players, with only two seniors. Wayne did graduate seven last year which included two of their setters.

Head coach, Traci Krusemark will be entering her sixth year with the Blue Devil volleyball program. Coach Krusemark talked about the start of practice being moved up.

“For us it’s good,” said Krusemark. “Yeah, I feel like there’s extra practice, maybe you don’t have to be so stressed to fit everything in or go on Saturday’s. But, so far nobody has really said anything about it that it feels too early.”

Wayne High ended their season with a Subdistrict title loss to Pierce in five sets, at 21-11 in 2016. The 21 wins marked the third out of four years WHS has posted 20 or more wins.

The two seniors, Kylie Hammer is an outside hitter and Shania Anderson is a middle hitter. Hammer gave a message to the underclassmen while Anderson talked about what it meant to play together during summer camps.

“Play how you practice and go hard all the time,” Hammer added. “Just kind of be comfortable with where you’re at.”

“We get to know each other better and it helps us work on getting better and practicing even harder,” Anderson mentioned.

Dale Hochstein and Stacy Johnson will again be assisting Krusemark on the coaching staff.

Wayne High will open their season with their jamboree on Thursday, August 17 at Wisner-Pilger at 5:30 p.m. WHS also did move up a game to Thursday, August 24 at Ponca at 7:45 p.m. for a varsity start time. The home opener for the Blue Devils will be on Tuesday, September 19 when Norfolk Catholic comes to town for a 7:30 p.m. start.
