NORFOLK – For the fourth time this season, the Wayne High Blue Devils and Pierce High Bluejays met and for the third consecutive year their final match came in the Subdistrict Championship game.
From Norfolk High, #1 Wayne and #2 Pierce took to the court during the Class C1-7 Subdistrict Volleyball Tournament.
Wayne High took a commanding lead in the opening set before securing a sweep (25-15, 25-19, 25-20). WHS is now 19-12 on the season as Pierce falls to 18-14 and Wayne High won 10 of the 12 sets played with Pierce on the season.
Freshman Lauren Pick paced the Blue Devils for a second straight night with 10 kills followed by senior Kylie Hammer recording eight kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Emily Armstrong added 12 digs, six kills and three service aces while junior Ashton Boyer followed with five kills and two service aces. Sophomore Allyson Avery tallied 18 set assists as sophomore Korrina Niemann and Hammer also added two aces each.
This is the first time since 2014 Wayne has won a Subdistrict Title. WHS lost to Omaha Concordia in the District Tournament in 2014, but qualified for state last in 2013 with a victory over Norfolk Catholic in the District Championship match.
All 12 Subdistrict Champions along with four wildcards among the top 16 Class C1 teams will be re-seeded 1-16 for a winner-take all sub-state round on Saturday, November 4. Game time and location will be determined by both schools.
The 2017 NSAA State Volleyball Championships are scheduled for Thursday, November 9 – Saturday, November 11 in Lincoln.
