Blue Devils Record Tuesday Night Victories

WAYNE – After both the Wayne High girls and boys basketball teams picked up a win at Boone Central/Newman Grove over the weekend, WHS opened a three-game week at home Tuesday night.

From Wayne Jr/Sr High School, the Blue Devils entertained Laurel-Concord-Coleridge.

In the girls match, Wayne jumped out front to a 16-6 lead while LCC answered back in the second with a 16-12 quarter. Wayne High led 28-22 at the break. WHS then opened with a 21-5 third quarter and closed out the game with a 10-3 fourth. With the 59-30 victory, Wayne High picked up their fifth win in six games to improve to 11-4 overall as LCC falls to 4-10.

Kylie Hammer went off for 25 points to score nearly half of the Blue Devil points. Tori Kniesche and Frankie Klausen each scored seven points as Gabi Meyer tallied six points and Ashton Boyer tacked on another five. Molly Hoskins grabbed a team-high nine rebounds followed by Meyer’s eight.

Bryn Schutte paced the Bears in scoring with 11 points followed by Sydney Chapman with seven points.

During the boys game, Wayne High took control of the first quarter, 21-10 and again in the second, 16-10. WHS held a 37-20 lead entering half. LCC attempted to come back in the third quarter (22-16), but Wayne High won the fourth, 16-11. Final found WHS beating the Bears for a second time this season (also winning 76-57 in the Wayne Holiday Tourney) as Tuesday nights score was 69-53 which saw Wayne improve to 7-6 as Laurel-Concord-Coleridge fell to 8-6.

Shea Sweetland poured in a team-high 21 points to lead Wayne High in scoring. Jack Evetovich and Mason Lee each tallied 14 points as Ryan Jaixen scored another eight. Lee grabbed a team-high eight rebounds followed by seven from Evetovich.

Ty Erwin recorded 19 points for the Bears, followed by Izac Reifenrath scoring 13 points and Noah Schutte added 10 points.

Wayne High will host North Bend Central on Thursday, January 11 while LCC will entertain Creighton on Friday.
