Clarkson/Leigh Almost Sees 20-Point Lead Evaporate in Victory Over Stanton

CLARKSON – Torrid shooting by Clarkson/Leigh in the first quarter gave them a cushion Stanton couldn’t overcome, as the Patriots beat the Mustangs at home on Thursday, 60-57.

The game started nowhere nearly as close as it finished, with the Patriots opening the game on an 11-0 run, and building a 23-3 lead early in the 2nd quarter.

But Stanton battled back. The 2nd quarter was the Mustangs’ turn to heat up from the field, particularly from the outside, where they hit five three-pointers en route to a 25-point second quarter.

Stanton would trim Clarkson/Leigh’s lead to one possession numerous times in the second half, and would even get within one on a T.J. Larson three-pointer.

But Clarkson/Leigh made enough plays down the stretch – including two key offensive rebounds from Daniel Beller late – to escape with a victory.

The Patriots are now 4-5 over their last nine games after an 0-10 start to the season.
