Columbus Rides Great Pitching to Win Over Norfolk

NORFOLK – Columbus rode exemplary pitching to a 5-1 victory over Norfolk at Veterans Memorial Field Thursday evening.

Junior pitcher Jake Novicki tossed a complete game five-hitter to lead the Discoverers to their third win of the year.

Novicki seemed to find his groove when he pitched out of a jam in the 3rd. After the Panthers got runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs, Novicki picked Brandon Ellenwood off 2nd base. From there, Novicki settled down, striking out Andrew Fleecs and getting Gavin Schultz to ground out to short to end the inning.

From that point, Norfolk could only manage two more hits the rest of the way.

Columbus’ bats were hot early, plating 4 runs in the 1st inning, thanks to four singles and two errors, all coming after the Discoverers had two outs.

Columbus next hosts Omaha South on Monday, while Norfolk next travels to GACC-SS-WPB.
