Hartington-Newcastle Wins First Home Tournament in 14 Years

HARTINGTON – It had been since 2003, but the Hartington-Newcastle girls basketball finally hoisted the trophy of their own post-holiday tournament Friday.

The Wildcats used a heavy pressure defense to pull away from Wynot in the 2nd half of a 49-36 win to take the championship of the Hartington Post-Holiday Classic.

Turnovers were fairly even in the first half, as both offenses struggled to find rhythm against their opponents’ pressure defense. But in the second half, Hartington-Newcastle got established inside, with junior Belle Harms scoring a season-high 18 points to lead all scorers.

The win not only ended a 14-year streak without a tournament championship, but was also Hartington’s first win over Wynot in a decade. They had lost 18 straight to the Blue Devils prior to Friday.
