Late Norfolk Rally Comes Up Short Against Lincoln Southwest

NORFOLK – A near miraculous comeback came up short for the Norfolk boys on Thursday.

Trailing 49-40 to Lincoln Southwest with 1:15 to go, the Panthers nearly rallied, but Tate Werner’s half-court shot at the buzzer missed and the Silver Hawks survived 50-47.

Norfolk’s offense found a groove early, particularly from the outside. Senior Zack James hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter as Norfolk built a 16-12 lead.

But Southwest’s defense turned up the pressure in the second quarter, keeping Norfolk without a field goal. Meanwhile the Silver Hawks found their touch, with Collin Kohl nailing four 3-pointers in the first half.It was 24-18 Lincoln SW at the break.

In the second half, Southwest senior point guard JaQuaylon Mays got going. Mays was held to just three points in the Silver Hawks’ loss to Norfolk last season, but he made up for it Thursday, finishing with 18 points and five rebounds to give Southwest their third straight win.

This was Lincoln Southwest’s first win over Norfolk in almost five years. The Panthers have now lost two in a row after a five-game winning streak.
