HASTINGS – Day one of the Class B NSAA State Softball Tournament took place Wednesday afternoon.
From the Smith Softball Complex in Hastings #4 Wayne took on #5 Gretna in a game that lasted about two and a half hours.
Wayne answered every run from Gretna in the first three innings, but the defending runner-up from 2016 and 2015 champions opened the scoring column with nine runs in three innings. Final found Gretna winning 12-3 to improve to 21-5 while the Blue Devils fall to 28-4.
Gretna opened with a two-run homerun in the first inning while WHS added two runs off of two outs in the home half of the first. Both teams added a run in the third before Gretna scored a run in the fifth, three in the sixth and five in the seventh.
Individually for Wayne High senior Kennedy Maly recorded a solo homerun and added a single while sophomore Tori Kniesche singled twice. Junior Maysn Dorey, junior Annie Kniesche and senior Jamie Gamble each singled. Junior Abigail Ankeny tacked on a double.
Tori Kniesche suffered the loss in seven innings allowing 12 runs (seven earned) off of 10 hits while striking out 11 batters and walking another seven.

Wayne will face #1 Elkhorn South at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday in the loser’s bracket. The defending champions, Storm suffered a 9-5 loss to #8 McCook earlier Wednesday.
Also in the first round Class B action, #6 Seward defeated #3 York (10-6) and #7 Crete won over #2 Hastings (5-2).
In Class C, #8 Guardian Angels Central Catholic suffered an 11-0 loss to #1 Malcolm Wednesday morning. The Bluejays will face #5 Chadron at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
