Norfolk Catholic Defense Stymies O’Neill in Shutout Win

O’NEILL – By vanquishing the 2016 Class C1 champs, Norfolk Catholic may have established themselves as the favorites to win the 2017 crown.

The Knights defense limited O’Neill to just 159 yards in pitching their first shutout of the year, a 35-0 win in O’Neill on Friday.

In the first quarter, it seemed the only thing that could stop Norfolk Catholic was themselves, as drives stalled due to early penalties. But O’Neill was unable to capitalize offensively, leaving the game scoreless after one.

The Knights broke open the scoring early in the second quarter, as sophomore quarterback Nate Brungardt found fullback Payton Love on a swing pass for a 9-yard touchdown. From there, the flood gates opened.

Junior running back Dylan Kautz was able to establish himself as a running threat early in the game, finishing with 213 yards on the ground and a six-yard touchdown run that gave the Knights a 14-0 lead at the half.

From there, Norfolk Catholic methodically dominated the second half, holding O’Neill to just 41 second-half yards, and getting touchdowns from Ryan Vetter (27-yard run), Kelby Schaefer (1-yard run) and Chase Abler (2-yard run).

The win moves #1 Norfolk Catholic to 6-0 on the year, while the defending champs are all but eliminated from postseason contention at 2-4. The Eagles would at least need to win out with Pierce, Madison and #4 Wayne remaining on the schedule, to have a chance at making the field of 16 in Class C1.

The win was career win number 342 for Norfolk Catholic head coach Jeff Bellar, putting just one shy of tying the all-time Nebraska record held by Creighton Prep’s Tom Jaworski.
