Pierce Holds Wayne To Five Second Half Points During Subdistrict Championship Match

NORFOLK – A rematch from last year’s Subdistrict Championship game featured #1 Pierce vs. #2 Wayne High during the C1-7 Girls Title game.

From Norfolk High on Thursday, the two teams battled for a second time this season. Wayne won over Pierce in last year’s overtime thriller, 39-37, while Pierce defeated Wayne earlier this season, 57-51.

Each team saw their consecutive scoring in bunches. Pierce jumped out front 7-0, before Wayne answered back with six straight to end the first quarter down 11-8. The second quarter is where most of the scoring came from as Pierce again held a 25-15 lead before Wayne went on a 9-0 run to finish the half down 32-29. In the second half, it was all Pierce. The Bluejays outscored Wayne 12-2 in the third and 8-3 in the fourth. Final found Pierce winning 52-34 to improve to 18-7 on the year while Wayne ended their season at 18-7.

The Bluejays were led in scoring by junior Carly Sutherland with 16 points and senior Hailey Race added another 13.

Wayne was led in scoring by senior Kelsey Boyer pouring in all 11 of her points in the second, while junior Kylie Hammer tacked on 10 points and sophomore Gabi Meyer scored another seven first half points.

Pierce will move onto the C1-4 District Final against Ord who held off O’Neill 40-37 in the C1-8 Subdistrict Thursday. The Pierce/Ord match will be held at a neutral site with a time to be determined next Friday, February 24.

Five seniors on Wayne’s team played their final game as a Blue Devil. They were Lindy Sandoz, Kelsey Boyer, Morgan Keating, Allison Echtenkamp and Kiara Hochstein.
