NORFOLK – The Pierce Lady Bluejays were back in action on Tuesday night as Pierce is trying to get back to the state tournament for a fifth straight year.
First, they had to get past Norfolk Catholic.
The Bluejays have struggled as of late, losing five out of their last seven games while Norfolk Catholic captured their first win on Monday since January.
Norfolk Catholic controlled the tempo in the first half and did not trail until two minutes remained in the 2nd quarter, where Pierce took a five point lead. The Knights were able to tie it up shortly after and the game remained tied, 21-21, heading into halftime.
Much like the first quarter, Norfolk Catholic came out and controlled the game and led Pierce 31-29 heading to the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Bluejays, as they held Norfolk Catholic scoreless and would end the game on a 15-0 run and advance to the subdistrict finals on Thursday with a 44-31 victory.
Pierce shot 36% on the night and were out rebounded by the Knights, but the Bluejays were able to take advantage at the free throw line were they shot 72% on 18 attempts.
Pierce improved to 17-7 on the year while Norfolk Catholic’s season comes to an end finishing 4-18. Hailey Race and Carly Sutherland, both of Pierce, led all scorers with 12 points each.
In the second game of the Class C1-7 subdistricts on Tuesday, the Wayne Blue Devils faced off against a scrappy squad in the West Point-Beemer Cadets.
The Blue Devils started sluggish out of the gates, but were able to take a 12-10 lead into the second quarter after junior Kylie Hammer got a steal and bucket just before the buzzer.
Wayne took the lead into halftime and in the second half led by as much as 14 points, but just when it seemed like the Blue Devils would put things away, the Cadets came right back and cut it within 5 with just two minutes remaining.
Late free throws helped Wayne seal the deal as they advance to the subdistrict finals on Thursday against Pierce with a 55-45 win over West Point-Beemer.
The Cadets finish their season with a 8-17 record, while Wayne notches their 18th win on the year.
Junior Kylie Hammer finished the evening with 23 points and 7 rebounds for the Blue Devils while Brittany Hinkle led the Cadets with 19 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
